A college list builder that shows its reasoning
Pave's college list builder drafts a balanced list of reach, target and likely colleges for each student. It only suggests colleges with a verified program in the student's subject, and you decide what goes on the list.

How the college list builder works
Open a student, go to Colleges and start a Smart Shortlist. It runs in the background and shows its progress while it works.
1. Set the must-haves
Enter what the student wants to study and up to six countries in order of preference. Add a teaching language if the student needs one.
2. Add the academics
GPA on a 4.0 scale, SAT, ACT, IB score or A-level grades. Pave fills these from the student's profile when they are already there.
3. Say what matters
Pick a safer, balanced or ambitious mix, how much ranking matters, a yearly budget, campus size and list length from 6 to 18 colleges.
4. Review and add
Each suggestion shows its group, an admission estimate, the matched program and a short reason. Add the ones you agree with, one by one or all at once.
Filters first, then ranking
Must-haves are strict. A college that fails one never appears, however well it scores elsewhere.
- A verified program that matches the student's intended major
- Only the countries you chose, spread so one country does not fill the list
- An optional required teaching language
- Your safer, balanced or ambitious mix sets how many reach, target and likely colleges you get
Teach it what you think
Mark any suggestion as a good match, adjust or reject, with a note on why. Pave uses that feedback the next time it builds a list.
- A short reason for every college, so you can explain it to the family
- A confidence level for each estimate
- A warning when the student's academic data was limited
- A history of the feedback you gave for each student
From college list to applications
Once a college is on the list, track the application in the same place: application type, status, decision, deadline and notes.
Admission rate and tuition sit beside each college, and essays for each college stay in the student's workspace. See how AI essay feedback works next.

Questions about the college list builder
How does Pave decide if a college is a reach, target or likely?
Pave estimates the student's chance from the college's published admission rate, or its ranking when there is no rate, then adjusts it for GPA, SAT or ACT and IB score. Under 25% is a reach and 65% or more is likely. Colleges ranked in the top 30 are never marked likely.
Is the admission estimate a prediction?
No. It is a rough guide for building a balanced list. Each college shows a confidence level based on how much academic data was available, and Pave warns you when the profile was thin.
Which countries can the list include?
Colleges in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland, Singapore, Hong Kong and the UAE. Choose up to six countries for each list.
Can I build a list without the AI shortlist?
Yes. Search the college catalog by program, country and ranking, and add colleges by hand. The shortlist is optional and every college it suggests needs your click to be added.
Does the student see the list?
Yes. Colleges you add go on the student's college list, which they also see when they log in to Pave.
