Digital and AI-Enabled Guidance: How Schools Can Use AI Responsibly Under FutuReady

FutuReady includes digital and AI-enabled guidance. Learn how Dubai schools can use AI tools in career guidance responsibly and effectively.

In short: Digital and AI-enabled guidance is one of the nine areas in KHDA's FutuReady Framework. Done well, AI helps counsellors personalise guidance at scale. Done badly, it replaces human judgement and creates data risks. The goal is AI that supports counsellors, not AI that replaces them.

Why AI belongs in guidance now

A typical counsellor supports far more students than they can see one-to-one. AI can help close that gap:

  • Personalised exploration: matching student interests to pathways and courses
  • Information at scale: answering routine questions about requirements and deadlines
  • Feedback: first-pass feedback on personal statements and reflections
  • Insight: spotting students who haven't engaged or are falling behind

Where the human must stay in charge

  • Final university and pathway recommendations
  • Conversations about wellbeing, family pressure or uncertainty
  • Support for students of determination
  • Anything involving judgement about a student's potential

A responsible AI checklist for schools

  • Students and parents know when AI is being used
  • Student data is processed under a clear data agreement
  • AI outputs are reviewed by a counsellor before they shape decisions
  • Tools give students feedback rather than writing their essays for them
  • Use is age-appropriate, with stricter limits for younger students
  • Staff are trained on what the tools can and can't do

Teaching AI literacy as part of guidance

The digital area isn't only about the school using AI. Students also need to understand how AI is changing the jobs they'll enter. Good guidance programmes include:

  • How AI is reshaping industries students are interested in
  • Which human skills, such as judgement, creativity and communication, become more valuable
  • Using AI tools ethically for research and learning

How Pave helps

Pave uses AI to support counsellors, not replace them. It provides personalised college matches, essay feedback and brainstorming that guide students without writing for them, and flags at-risk students for follow-up. Student data is handled under GDPR principles, and a Data Processing Agreement is available.

FAQ

Does FutuReady require schools to use AI?

Digital and AI-enabled guidance is one of the nine areas. Check the handbook for the exact indicators.

Is it acceptable for AI to give students essay feedback?

Yes, if it gives feedback and doesn't write the essay. Most universities expect the student's own work.

How do we protect student data?

Use tools with clear data processing agreements, limit what data is shared, and keep counsellors in control of decisions.
