Timing and scoring

Plan your prep timeline by understanding score release dates, validity periods, and how colleges review results.

Timing influences when you should register and how you interpret your score report.

Score Release

TOEFL scores are typically available four to eight days after the test. IELTS paper-based results post within 13 days, while computer-delivered results arrive in three to five days.

Validity Period

Both exams remain valid for two years. Schedule your test so scores remain current through your application deadlines.

Retake Policies

You can take the TOEFL once every three days and IELTS up to four times per month, depending on center availability. Plan retakes early to avoid clashes with school exams.

Score Reporting

Know when to send scores. Some universities require official results before the application deadline, while others accept self-reported scores temporarily.

Interpreting Scores

Many institutions publish minimum scores or preferred ranges. Some provide TOEFL-to-IELTS conversion charts—use them to understand how your performance translates between exams.

Use Diagnostic Data

Review section breakdowns to identify where you should invest additional preparation time before a retake.
