Acceptance and availability

Compare how frequently the TOEFL and IELTS are offered worldwide and how institutions treat each score.

Access and recognition vary by region, so it is important to confirm availability before committing to a test.

Global Test Centers

The TOEFL iBT is available in 190+ countries with weekly administrations. IELTS operates over 1,600 test centers worldwide, with paper-based sessions typically offered up to four times per month.

Home and Online Options

TOEFL Home Edition is accessible in most locations except where local regulations restrict it. IELTS Online currently serves select countries; always verify eligibility.

Institutional Policies

Most U.S. universities treat TOEFL and IELTS scores equally, but some professional programs specify minimum section scores or prefer one exam. Double-check requirements for graduate business, law, or health sciences programs.

Superscoring and Score Choice

ETS allows you to send the TOEFL MyBest score, which combines your highest section results across test dates. IELTS does not superscore; institutions receive each full test report.

Score Submission Logistics

TOEFL scores can be sent electronically to four institutions for free at registration. IELTS typically requires requesting Test Report Forms to be mailed or sent electronically through the IELTS system.

Keep an Eye on Updates

Testing organizations frequently expand availability. Monitor official announcements and register early to secure preferred dates.
